JAKE ONE - TOWN BIZ MIXTAPE

One of Seattle's best producers Jake One not only makes the slappers, but he has been a big collector & fan of Seattle rap since way back. He's compiled a mixtape which showcases over 20 years of 206 music & teamed up with Stussy & Goods to release it.

I personally have a lot of memories of hearing these different joints!

What's funny is I actually am on two of the tracks. I rap on #6 "Shit Hits The Fan" & scratch on #7 "Nightfall Round The Way".

Download it here for FREE & check it out. Seattle has a long history that is relatively unknown outside of the region, but it seems like with advocates like Jake One then that might just change!

REST IN PEACE DJ HIDEO!

Rest in Peace to my friend Hideo Sugano. Rob One was the first friends I really lost to cancer and also a fellow DJ. The difference with DJ Hideo is that I knew it was coming and was a little more prepared. With Guru I was somewhat prepared as well when finding out about his coma, although I didn't know about his cancer. When Rakim said "Serious as cancer" he wasn't joking!

Let's help fight & find a cure! Do what you can to support that! I think you can donate for funeral expenses and his daughter at DJHideo.com!

For those that don't know my first ALL DJ crew (before Shadyville, CORE, Henchmen, TechNitions, etc..) was NRC and DJ HIdeo was one of the few members from around the country. It was a small crew of about 10-15 at the most. DJ AP hold your head! Anyway, just wanted to share that and a picture from an Urban Network panel that we were on together back in the day. Just O (RIP) was also on that panel. It hurts to lose colleagues and friends, but we keep pushing on!

DJ Premier's Official statement

DOWNLOAD DJ PREMIER'S - TRIBUTE MIX

IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.

FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.

I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER

Guru's family's statement

Guru's family released a statement (courtesy of CNN)

“The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka Guru for the outpouring of love, concern and support. Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.”

“Guru suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, Guru was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness."

"Early on the morning of April 19, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.”

“Guru died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.”

“The family is not aware of any foundations established by Guru. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

GURU of GANG STARR - RIP!

RIP G.U.R.U. of GANG STARR

Anybody that knows me knows that I am and was a big Gang Starr fan since the late 80s.

The homie Rob One (RIP) brought Guru to Seattle and that was the first time I got to connect on a personal level with him and will never forget them both. As hip hop grows in age we lose some of the real soldiers and pioneers.

I remember being with Guru in NYC when we received the news that Jam Master Jam (RIP) passed away and will never forget watching a grown man older than me crying.

That hit home with me. JMJ was the first DJ I met in '85 and as a kid that impacted me so much. He told me to stick with DJing and I did and I'm sure Guru's connection with JMJ was much deeper!

Personally I felt over the past few years that Guru was lost. I was always disappointed that he wasn't rollin' with DJ Premier and often wondered what was going on in his head. I know he had a lot of issues, but at the end of the day I felt he was being influenced by his new partner Solar.
I was really excited that one of my mixtape fellow mixtape legends Doo Wop was DJing for Guru and traveling around with him and Solar for a while, but still in the back of my mind was hoping that he would reunite with DJ Premier.

There were many sides to Guru and he had some real issues that he had to deal with long before this Cancer hit him, but at the end of the day that is all over and this man has touched so many people Worldwide!!

His legacy won't be forgotten from Gang Starr to the Jazzmatazz series and even his other works and guest appearances. Keith Elam aka Keithy E. The Guru aka Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal please Rest In Peace now!

p.s. I read a disturbing note on Primo's blog. This is rediculous to me, but check it for yourself. RIP Guru. Hold your head Premier! G A N G to the Starr Son!! Haters took this shit too far son!!
