RIP the Legendary Mr. Magic (WBLS Rap Attack)
I have to send condolences to the family & friends of Super Rockin' MR. MAGIC aka Sir Juice! He passed away from a heart attack.
Mr. Magic & Marley Marl are the main influences in why I got into radio and DJing. I remember listening to tapes and Mr. Magic would say "put the mixing gloves on Marley" and it'd be on. Time for the mix! The "Juice Crew" jumped off from his show & sparked the careers of the legendary Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Craig G, & many more!! He put out compilation albums Rap Attack vol 1-5 (I believe) that exposed me to many of the early rap joints.
If you know the history then you can only imagine how devastated a lot of founding fathers in the hip-hop game feel right now. I can still hear the female sweeper "Mista Mista Magic Magic Is Here" & also the male one "Mista Mista Magic Magic Super Super Blast Blast Powwwwww" which was on Whodini's first record. They had the song "Magic's Wand" dedicated to him on that album.
Anyway, I can go on & on. About 10 years after listening to WBLS tapes I actually got my start in radio on a show named after the legendary "Rap Attack", but accross the country in Seattle. Of course he was immortalized in the classic Notorious BIG joint "Juicy" with the line "every Saturday Night Rap Attack - Mr. Magic, Marley Marley Marl"
